Pianos Recycled challenges you to imagine ways to repurpose some or all of unwanted piano parts to prevent them ending in landfill!

Winners

From left to right: Frank Duyker, Ryan Mischkuling, Simeon Dux, Rodney Horsfall, Nick Carpenter and lucky draw winner Vinko Markoski. Absent is Birgit Jordan.

Background

Pianos not only embody a rich heritage of music and crafts skills but are made from materials that were sourced from depleted or near-depleted ancient forests and non-replenishable resources.

Sadly and despite this heritage, but typical in today’s “take, make, dispose” society, unwanted pianos end up in landfill. In Australia alone more than 2,000 pianos will end up at the municipal tip this year. Over the next 8 years the volume of pianos dumped would fill the MCG!

We are challenging practising, serious and aspiring artisans everywhere to craft objects from piano parts. Together we can develop a creative loop that will be better for the environment and building on the heritage of an unwanted piano, create new stories.

The Challenge

Imagine new jobs to be done for the piano. How might some or all of the parts of a deconstructed piano be used to create new functional or social value? What experience or experiences do you want to create?

Design. Add some innovation to your creative idea, visualise your creative solution and plan your project. As the overall visual effect and design intent is to showcase the piano, non-piano sourced materials may be incorporated in the design of the object but the judges will be looking to reward entries where piano materials predominate.

Create. Craft your item/object.
