Guest Speaker: Natalie Erika James (Filmmaker) and Isabel Avendano Hazbun (Woodworker)

This month we have a very special meeting! Natalie Erika James and Isabel Avendano Hazbun recently collaborated on the short film ‘Creswick’. The story follows ‘Sam’s’ fear of her childhood home being brought to light when her ageing father claims there is another presence in the house. 

The film was written and directed by Natalie and Isabel made a collection of chairs which reflected the emerging theme of the movie. The screening of Creswick (10 mins) will be followed by talks from Isabel and Natalie about the role of the furniture in the story, and how Isabel met the challenge of using woodwork to reflect the story.

Natalie Erika James is a Japanese-Australian writer & director and a graduate of the VCA. Her shorts have screened internationally at film festivals, including Melbourne International Film Festival, Palm Springs International and ShortFest. Natalie was awarded the Film Victoria funded director’s attachment on the sci-fi thriller, STEM. She directs commercials and music videos through production company, Fiction;

Isabel Avendano Hazbun came to Australia in her early twenties and graduated with a Bachelor of Design in Textiles at UNSW where she developed her love of textiles and weaving. After working in theatre, building and set design, she completed the  Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology at the Sturt School for Wood in Mittagong. She moved to Melbourne to develop her practice, combining the two mediums of textiles and wood in works that range from jewelry to furniture and sculpture .
