Fixed Project Class
In our Fixed Project Class (FPC), students create a beautifully designed night stand which provides an opportunity to learn a variety of skills from traditional hand cut joinery to more modern woodworking techniques. The joinery on the night stand involves the use of hand tools such as chisels and hand planes whilst at the same time introducing students to more modern approaches to curved detail work. Students also learn about a variety of finishes that can be used. At the end of the term students will leave with their finished bedside table.
These classes are more suited to beginners who require some more structure and instruction.

Timber and Equipment
Students are required to purchase the timber needed for this project for $270 (part of the fee).
Tools and equipment are provided. The school also supplies consumables such as glue, sandpaper, timber filler, screws, finish, masks and protective equipment. The student may also supply their own finish – oil or lacquer.
Protective Clothing
Clothing and footwear should be suitable for a workshop environment (but not heavy industrial), providing protection against wood chips, dropped objects, and spills or splashes of varnishes and glues, while hair should be restrained or covered to avoid entanglement with machinery. Open toed shoes are never acceptable and students will not be permitted entry to the workshop if these are worn.

Who is the class for?
- The Fixed Project Classes (FPC) are designed to give students an opportunity to learn a variety of skills from traditional hand cut joinery to more modern woodworking techniques including the safe use of tools and machinery. It is ideal for beginners who are beginning their woodworking journey.
How long is the class?
- The school runs 10 weekly classes of 3hrs duration each term and there are 4 terms each year, which roughly coincide with school holidays. Note that we typically do not break for public holidays due to a lack of capacity for catch-up classes.
What are we making in the Fixed Project Class?
- You’ll build a beautifully designed mid-century-inspired nightstand using Australian hardwood. Along the way, you will learn to use key woodworking machines and hand tools like chisels and hand planes. The project includes techniques such as bridle joints, mitred boxes, and optional curved detail work. You’ll also explore different finishing options to personalise your piece.
Can I continue my project if it’s not finished within the term?
- The project is designed to be achievable within the 10-week course. If it’s not complete by the end, you’ll need to take it home. However, returning students get early access to enrolments before they open to the public—so you’re welcome to join an Open Class next term to finish your project or start something new.
What if I miss a class?
- Generally speaking, we are unable to provide make-up classes for missed classes, even if the reasons are outside of your control. This is primarily due to safety considerations as we want to ensure a safe teacher-to-student ratio. On occasion, if another class is not full, we may be able to accommodate extra students for make-up classes – this is handled on a case-by-case basis.
What materials and tools are provided?
- Tools and equipment are provided. The school also supplies consumables such as glue, sandpaper, finish and protective equipment. Unlike in our Open Classes, timber is supplied and included in the classes’ fees.
What is the class size?
- Class sizes are limited to a maximum of 12 to ensure personalised attention. This allows tutors to provide tailored guidance to each student. Open classes are typically supervised by a teacher and an assistant. Typically, our assistants are very highly skilled woodworkers themselves.
What safety measures are in place?
- Safety is paramount. Students receive an induction on safe machine operation and are supervised when using machines. Students must bring appropriate protective clothing and footwear. Open-toed shoes are not permitted, jewellery must be removed, and hair must be tied back.
What are the class fees and payment methods?
- Fees are $1,340 inc. GST per term, which includes $270 for materials. Payments are accepted via VISA, Mastercard or direct debit (we do not accept American Express).
How do I enrol in a class?
- Enrolment details and class timetables are available on the VWA Class Timetable on the VWA website.
Where are the classes held?
- Classes take place at the VWA Wood Design Centre and Workshop, located at 5 Tyrone St, North Melbourne, VIC 3051.
Is there parking on site?
- There’s limited on-site parking, but there’s plenty of both free and paid street parking nearby. If you need to drop off material or pick up your project at the end of the term, there’s a 30-minute loading zone right near the entrance on Tyrone Street for easy access.
What are the learning outcomes?
- Through the 10-week term, students will be shown how to:
- 1. Collaborate and share insights with peers in a supportive learning environment.
- 2. Design and plan a woodworking project, including creating sketches and determining dimensions and preparing a cut list for your project.
- 3. Select appropriate timber and understand its properties for their specific project.
- 4. Safely operate hand tools and machinery under supervision that are relevant to your project.
- 5. Learn and apply joinery techniques, such as mortise and tenon joints depending on your project (personal or fixed project)
- 6. Understand wood movement and how to accommodate it in design and construction.
- 7. Develop problem-solving skills to address challenges during the building process.
- 8. Gain confidence in working independently after initial instruction.
