VWA Artists in Residence Update October
Isabel Avendano
Isabel recently had an exhibition at Craft Victoria called Wall Dimples.
Wall Dimples is a collection of small-scale functional sculptures made entirely from recycled waste. Detailed and exceptionally executed they are crafted from timber off-cuts and discarded tyre inner tubes with a recurring circular motif inspired by the hollowed circular geometry of the source material, the Dursley Pedersen bicycle. These wall hooks exist in a space between contemporary art, design and craft.

Jess Humpston
Lately I’ve been working on a piece which incorporates some paper elements draped over a timber frame to soften what is typically a solid cabinet. Images show some pattern making and sewing in progress.

Freddy Mata
Over the past few months Freddy has been working towards showcasing two pieces, ‘Zapara’ and ’Don Matias’ at Hue & Cry Gallery in Geelong and another work ‘Atrium Dos’ at Linden New Art for Design Fringe. Atrium Dos is on display until the 20th of October at 26 Acland St, St Kilda VIC
Zapara: A tribute to an island that I used to go to when I was a kid back in Venezuela. It is a way of managing feeling homesick. The shape of each component emulates the sand dunes on the island and the timber selection (Dura ash) is because the sand is very dark on the beach.
Don Matias: As an architect, my appreciation for buildings that seems to be a divine composition created by someone that probably just received those shapes in their mind out of the blue but got to make it come to life, is something that I think is quite present in my work. In this case Don Matias is a tribute piece to Maracaibo’s modern architecture
ATRIUM DOS: Inspired by the glass facade of The Atrium at Federation Square, a space that has the role (from my architect point of view) of the public town square where people gather to express themselves to share ideas. The piece emulates the environment at Federation Square and duplicates the openness and fair discussion of concepts of life from the public domain into the home where it will sit.
