Take 2 – Create from a Crate
Challenging woodworkers to make a beautiful object or furniture piece from discarded timber pallets and crates.

Exhibition Information

Double Take in Wood is an exploration of new generation woodwork that celebrates the paring of age-old techniques and materials with contemporary design and technology. The exhibition will bring together furniture, sculpture, functional and decorative objects, featuring pieces from some of Australia's most celebrated makers.  

A panel of prominent and respected woodworkers, designers and arts professionals will judge the exhibition with a prize pool of over $10,000. 

Exhibition categories

Fine Woodworking

A showcase of Australian woodwork that pays respect to traditional techniques, fine craftsmanship and functionality whilst pushing the boundaries of contemporary design.

Create from a Crate

Inviting Australian woodworkers, designers and makers to rise to the challenge of making a beautiful object or furniture piece from rough and discarded timber pallets and crates. 

The work will  provide an engaging way to shine a spotlight on the environmental impact of timber packaging waste.

Public Programs

Meet the Makers

Pop-by the gallery any Saturday during the exhibition to meet the VWA woodworkers. They will be on-hand to answer your questions and walk you through the exhibit.

VWA Members Catch-Up

All welcome.
Join the VWA members for an exhibition floor walk and discussion. This event will provide an experts view of the techniques and skills utilised by the master craftspeople who are showcased in the exhibition. This is also a great opportunity to find out more about the Victorian Woodworkers Association's membership programs and benefits.

Take inspiration from the Double Take in Wood Exhibition to create a wooden train from industrial timber packaging. Suitable for ages 5 – 8.

Seniors Morning Tea and Floor Talk

Join John Monument, long-time member of the Victorian Woodworkers Association for morning tea and hear them discuss the work on show at the Double Take in Wood Exhibition.

Judges

Dr Alex Selenitsch

Dr Alex Selenitsch is a Senior Lecturer in Architectural Design at the University of Melbourne. He has taught architectural design, theory and history at Deakin University, RMIT and the University of Melbourne and has championed the inclusion of wood design and construction in architectural course curriculum.His creative practice ranges from literature and graphics to sculpture, furniture and architecture A survey of his work titled LIFE/TEXT was held at Heide, MOMA, Melbourne in 2015/2016.

Linda Nathan

Linda Nathan is print and online editor of Australian Wood Review, Australia’s foremost magazine for fine woodworkers. As well as authoring hundreds of articles she has curated several exhibitions, and conceived and judged many competitions and awards schemes for woodworkers.

Ward Petherbridge

Ward Petherbridge is the owner of commercial timber waste recycling firm Smart Recycling. He was the instigator and co-founder of the Victorian Woodworkers Association's successful Create from a Crate Exhibition and is also a VWA Committee Member and a keen collector of fine woodworking. 

Adam Stewart

Adam Stewart is a long-term Victorian Woodworker Association (VWA) member. A successful and highly respected woodworker, he has a keen eye for design and innovation. Adam was previously a tenant of the Association’s prestigious residency program and a teacher at the VWA School of Woodcraft. 

Davey Warnock

Davey Warnock is the Cultural Programs Officer at Manningham City Council and the exhibition co-curator
